Program Note
I was asked to write a piece for organ solo by my old friend Jacob Kruzansky in August of 2019. I started working on the project, but faltered; in October I was given the opportunity to write a piece for organ for the Yale University Church and thus completed the work.
This piece is intended to have a dual function: it can be performed as a two-movement concert piece, or as a prelude and postlude to a traditional church service. The work was conceived mostly as an experiment in form. It consists of two asymmetrical movements that are symmetrical over each other. The first movement begins brightly with a D center and ends quietly elsewhere; the second begins quietly elsewhere and ends with a loud D climax.
